Winter

we met in spring
the ice began to melt
around my heart
when you said you loved
me a thousand times

I believed the promises
that you made
of an eternal sunshine
that would keep that ice away

we married in summer
burning for one another
white hot, consumed by flames of passion
that nothing could ever seem to quench

we had children in autumn
the cooling down lasted for years
one by one, trees began to loosen
their tight grasp of leaves
that once thrived

so too, year after year, we loosened
our grip on everything
that could have been

we divorced in winter
the bitter cold and unrelenting
wind blows against our home
and has numbed our hearts

it is an eternal season
